Llyn Idwal: A Mountain Lake Steeped in Legend

Llyn Idwal is a breathtaking glacial lake set in the heart of Cwm Idwal, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Glyderau. Located within the Ogwen Valley in Snowdonia National Park, this iconic lake is renowned for its striking scenery, crystal-clear waters, and its connection to Welsh legend. Positioned at around 370 metres above sea level, Llyn Idwal is one of the most accessible and captivating mountain lakes in Snowdonia.

A Lake of Legend Beneath the Cliffs

Llyn Idwal’s tranquil waters are framed by rugged cliffs, including the famous Idwal Slabs, a favourite among rock climbers. The lake itself is often perfectly still, reflecting the jagged peaks of Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, and Tryfan. It’s a place where natural beauty and myth intertwine, as Llyn Idwal is said to be cursed after the tragic death of Prince Idwal. Today, the lake’s serene atmosphere makes it a popular spot for walkers, photographers, and anyone drawn to Snowdonia’s rugged charm.
