Manod Bach: A Quiet Summit with Big Views
Manod Bach might not be the most famous peak in Snowdonia, but for those in the know, it’s a hidden gem. Sitting just north of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this 662-metre mountain is steeped in history and framed by dramatic quarry landscapes. It’s the smaller sibling of Manod Mawr, but it offers equally stunning views, without the crowds.

Where Industrial History Meets Natural Beauty
Surrounded by old slate quarries and mountain lakes, Manod Bach has a character all its own. The landscape is a blend of wild terrain and industrial remnants, giving the walk a unique atmosphere. On a clear day, you can see across to the Moelwynion, the Rhinogydd, and even glimpses of Yr Wyddfa in the distance.
Though not as rugged as other Snowdonia summits, Manod Bach delivers an authentic hillwalking experience, with peace, history, and wide-open skies.
Snowdon’s varied routes mean there’s something for everyone, from leisurely walkers to seasoned hikers. Whether you’re taking the popular Llanberis Path or tackling the exhilarating Crib Goch ridge, each ascent is rewarding in its own way. Reaching the summit is not just about the view; it’s about the journey, the effort, and the stories you’ll tell after.

What to Know Before You Go
This is a quieter part of Snowdonia, so don’t expect marked trails or frequent hikers. A good map, compass, or GPS device is highly recommended, especially if linking Manod Mawr. The area can be boggy after rain, and slate underfoot can be slippery, so wear sturdy boots and be prepared for changeable weather.
Why We Love Manod Bach
Manod Bach is full of surprises. From historic quarry workings to unexpectedly expansive views, it’s a peaceful climb that feels like a step back in time. Its quiet nature makes it perfect for slow, thoughtful hikes, ideal for photographers, nature-lovers, or anyone wanting to escape the busy trails.

How to Get to Manod Bach
Start from Blaenau Ffestiniog, where parking is available near the town centre. For public transport, Blaenau has a train station connected to the Conwy Valley Line. From there, you can walk straight from town into the foothills of Manod Bach.
If you’re travelling by public transport, the nearest train station is in Bangor, from where you can catch a bus to Llanberis. Sherpa buses also link the main trailheads, including Pen-y-Pass and Snowdon Ranger.

A Bit of Manod Bach History
Manod Bach lies in the heart of an area once rich with slate mining. During World War II, secret plans were even made to store artworks from the National Gallery deep within the nearby quarries, a testament to how remote and secure this area felt.
The mountain’s surroundings tell a story of industry, resilience, and nature reclaiming the land, making it an especially rewarding place to explore.
