Mynydd Mawr

Mynydd Mawr: The Dragon's Back of Snowdonia
Mynydd Mawr, often nicknamed the “Dragon’s Back” due to its distinctive ridged silhouette, is a lesser-known gem in Snowdonia. Standing at 698 metres, it’s not the tallest peak in the region, but what it lacks in height, it more than makes up for in character. With its steep slopes, panoramic views, and quieter trails, Mynydd Mawr is perfect for hikers seeking a rewarding challenge without the usual crowds.

A Hidden Gem with Big Mountain Views
Mynydd Mawr’s rugged terrain and dramatic profile make it one of Snowdonia’s most striking smaller peaks. Located on the western edge of the national park, it overlooks Llyn Cwellyn and offers some of the best views towards the Nantlle Ridge and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). The ascent is typically a mix of grassy slopes and rocky outcrops, with sections of narrow ridges that add a bit of excitement.
The summit offers sweeping views over the Llyn Peninsula, the Irish Sea, and the surrounding mountains. It’s an underrated spot that delivers an authentic mountain experience, perfect for those who want to escape the busier trails around Snowdon.
